Google Android and the "Kill Switch"

Google has taken a leaf out of Steve Jobs’ iPhone and included a remote kill-switch in its Android operating system that runs its own G1 mobile phone. Using the kill-switch, Google can remove any application from Android handsets that the search engine giant finds violating its terms and conditions.

The fact came to light on Friday as some tech bloggers picked ‘the little devil’ in the fine print of Android Market’s terms of service while reviewing the handsets provided by Google and T-Mobile for media previews. In contrast, Apple had not even mentioned anything about such a switch

So well I guess its yet another "do as I say or die" kind of a deal.

Now to add to this , last night I got to play extensively with the G1 phone. It was one of the most impressive experiences I have had in a long time. its a lot lighter than I expected. The touch screen is a lot more responsive than I expected and the features are pretty impressive. Thank you t-mobile :)

I do plan to buy one for the house.

Error-operation stopped at your request:mail.box

User has been using Lotus Notes for quite a while , everything was working fine.,

Now we upgraded the user to Lotus Notes 8.0.2 and every time he tries to send an email. he gets this error. We blew away the ini file and reinstalled the notes client and all seemed fine for a day or 2 and the error came back . The user gets a pop-up window as shown below and it cannot send any emails out.

We tried to roll him back to Lotus Notes 8.0.1 (yeah yeah I know its not a Notes problem!!) but that again fixed the error for a few days and was back again.

Solutions:

Temporary Solution.

Exit the lotus notes client
Edit the notes.ini file and delete the following lines
EXTMGR_ADDINS=nPgpOvid.dll
NSF_HOOKS=nPgpOvid.dll

Removing the two lines shown above from notes.ini and restarting Lotus Notes solved the problem.

Now here is the problem with this work- around...The lines are inserted each time the PGP Desktop restart. So despite the fact that, within PGP Desktop, Tools -> Options -> Messaging, “Secure Email” was not selected and, in Tools -> Options -> Notifier, “Use PGP Notifier” was not selected.

Permanent Solution:

The permanent solution is to remove the addin totally for Lotus Notes. This will not remove the application but it will remove it from protecting the Lotus Notes (email) part permanently and will not re-enable it after a reboot/restart of lotus notes client. Thus removing this error permanently.

To do this, in Windows, go to Start ----> Run and type in

“msiexec /I PGPDesktop.msi PGP_INSTALL_NOTES=0″

Domino 8.5 Different modes of DWA

In the older versions of Lotus Domino we had 2 mail templates. Mail and domino web access.

The Mail being the supposedly "lighter" and "faster" template for web access to the mailbox and the Domino Web Access (DWA) being the rich and slower one.

Then Lotus combined it all into one template and either using the Notes.ini file or the "ui=" at the end of the url we could switch between the 2 tempates. Despite that it did nothing to the speed.

A lot if us kept screaming "hey lotus. this is just web based access to email. make it lighter , make it faster". And as always they took their time but they listened. Thank you Lotus.

This new version comes with 3 modes

Full Mode
Lite Mode
Ultralite Mode

Full Mode.

This is the good old DWA. Big and heavy with all the nice stuff and functionality

Lite Mode:

Just the basic mail and calendar functions. They have removed the options to access journals and other peoples calendars that
are available in the full version

Ultralite Mode

Now this is probably the fastest web access to any email I have ever seen ..Great job Lotus!!!.. In fact I feel access my mail over the web using the Ultralite mode is even faster than the client access on a LAN. Now go figure that one out.

In the past, if we upgraded a users mail file template from his workstation ( believe me there are people that still do this !!!) we have had to go in and upgrade the design of the folders manually from the menu .

But now with version 8.x we can get it done at one go..... (or did I miss it in earlier versions??) Dont think so!

Error Synchronizing Notes calendar with Blackberry over desktop manager

I have a user who does NOT have an account on the BES but would like to synchronize his Lotus Notes contacts and calendar with the Blackberry device using the Desktop manager.

He is able to synchronize his contacts properly but when it tries to synchronize the calendar it gives the error shown below. Any ideas???

Environment:

Windows XP, Lotus Notes 8.0.1, Blackberry Desktop Manager 4.6 (tried pervious versions with the same error)

POP/IMAP client for Blackberries

Just upgraded a wintel server from 7.0.3 to 8.0.1 and here is what am seeing... server still responds well and no problems with users accessing it. any ideas?

How do I get hidden mail rules to re-appear in the Lotus Notes client

Got asked a very interesting question by a client today (2nd client in 2 weeks to ask me this same question). Heres what he said

"I just upgraded a users mail box to the version 8 template and all his mail rules are gone! what happened? why did they get deleted?"

Well , they are not deleted , they just disappeared. Here's how to get them back.

Open your mail file.
When your in your mailbox , Press Ctrl/Shift and click on View from the Menu bar on top and select GoTo
This will open a pop up box as shown below with all the all hidden views in your mailbox

Open one of the view's names, for example: ($VIM100).
In the mail menu, go to View -> Search this view.
In the Search for field, enter the following query:

Field Form = "mailrule"

Click Search.
All MailRule documents that had disappeared should reappear.
Double-click on each document to open them.
Double-click on any opened document to place it in "Edit" mode.
Press Esc to close the document.
Click Accept to save the document.

All missing MailFile documents should appear in your Tools ->Rules view.

Now as to why they disappeared, will check with Lotus.

Terminal services with XP SP3 - cannot see Lotus Domino server conole

We are all used to using the command mstsc /console to connect to the Lotus Domino server in order to see the Lotus Domino console. But once you install Service Pack 3 on Windows XP . It does not work anymore. If you use the mstsc/console you will NOT see the Lotus Domino console. All you will see the is regular windows terminal.

In order to be able to view the Lotus Domino server console the new command now is

mstsc /admin

Wow thank you Microsoft that was a really badly needed change/fix.....Yeah rite!!!

How to upgrade IBM traveler client from 8.0.1 to 8.0.1.2

IBM Traveler Client Installation:

If you are installing over Lotus Notes Traveler Client 801 or 8011, first stop the client on the device. Select the Lotus Notes Traveler icon --> Menu --> Exit.
Once the Lotus Notes Traveler 8.0.1.2 server has been installed and is running, the Lotus Notes Traveler 8.0.1.2 client can be found at:
http(s):///traveler/index.html
or
\domino\html\traveler\LotusTraveler
The Lotus Notes Traveler client can be transfered to the device in several different ways, including:
Over-the-air (OTA) web download via the Client Download Web site.
ActiveSync
Bluetooth
Storage Card
Once the client has been transfered to the device, simply click on the install package to begin the installation.
If this is an upgrade from 801 or 8011 just follow the instructions of the Install Wizard to complete the installation.
If this is a new install, please review the installation instructions outlined in the 8.0.1 Info Center before beginning.

I am really not sure this was there in the initial release of IBM Lotus Traveler (am pretty sure it was not), but after I upgraded to the new 8.0.1.2 version , there seems to be a lot of client updates . They have also included client support for all the major languages. See screen shots below.

I upgraded the IBM Traveler from version 8.0.1 to 8.0.1.1 and on to 8.0.1.2 . I do hope this will fix a few of the major bugs in the previous version

One thing I have go give kudos for is the stat commands in traveler. It really gives you a very good idea of where things stand on the server. take a look at the example below.

T-Mobile to launch Google Android phone

T-Mobile is to launch the first phone based on Google's Android design on Sept 17, 2008 in hopes that the new device will compete with Apple's iPhone, Wired magazine reported on Friday. The smartphone will be manufactured by Taiwan-based High Tech Computer, and will have a large touch screen that slides out to reveal a five-row QWERTY keyboard. The device, which will be called the G1, will sell for $150 to T-Mobile customers in the first week of launch before it is offered to other customers at a higher price. Google developed the Android design to help it expand its successful advertising business into the increasingly lucrative mobile market. It released the parameters to an alliance of mobile phone carriers, developers and manufacturers earlier in the year. Deutsche Telecom's T-Mobile announced in February that it would introduce Android-based phones in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Yet another OS upgrade to my Blackberry 8320

I just found another new OS for the 8320 and this is available for Blackberries of the 8100 (Pearl) , 8300 (Curve) and the 8800(whatever it was called) series.

I do find it to be a quite a bit faster than the previous releases, (good job RIM).

But my old grievance still remains, that being the instability of the UMA . Now this could also be due to my router so I am not yet totally prepared to blame rim on it , but I do notice its a lot more unstable if you use the bluetooth . Now that part I guess RIM's going to work on.

Now for my UMA problem I have decided to get the latest router from Linksys (Read my my-next-router-it-has-qos-for-uma here)

I am getting tired of my router at home. The wired part works fine but since last sunday the wireless part keeps hanging/locking up. this means I have to keep rebooting the router. Now thats not going to work with me.

So I have decided to buy the new linksys WRT610N router.

The features in short are

Back from vacation

Been back a week but my lazy a** is still dragging from all the cajun food I feasted on (or as my sis loves to put it "pigged out " on!).
